MoBay police deserve praise for tackling traffic chaos

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to a recent letter to the editor which highlighted the extreme noise nuisance being caused by motor vehicles fitted with excessively loud and illegal mufflers. I fully agree with the writer’s concerns, as this problem has long plagued many communities across the island.

The Montego Bay Traffic Police and Enforcement Branch deserves to be commended for the sterling work they have been doing to address this very issue. In partnership with the Island Traffic Authority’s certifying officers, they have been actively removing licence plates from vehicles found with these offensive mufflers.

A significant number of motorists in Montego Bay have already been lawfully prosecuted under the Road Traffic Regulations for this serious breach. This demonstrates that the law is not merely sitting on the books but is being actively and professionally enforced in our second city.

The Montego Bay Traffic Police deserve widespread commendation for their diligence and professionalism in tackling this menace. Their consistent action sends a clear message that noise pollution from illegal mufflers will not be tolerated within the city.

Beyond the muffler issue, there has been a remarkable transformation in how public passenger vehicles now operate in Montego Bay. All PPVs are lawfully required to use the designated Montego Bay Transportation Centre, along with the two satellite transport centres established for this purpose.

The police assigned to the Montego Bay traffic department have done an outstanding job ensuring compliance with this arrangement. Motorists and operators are no longer permitted to illegally park along the city’s streets to solicit or wait for passengers, which has significantly reduced congestion and disorder.

This organised approach to public transportation has given Montego Bay a more efficient and orderly system that other parishes could well emulate. Residents and visitors alike can now navigate the city with far less chaos than in years past.

It is important that we, as citizens, acknowledge good work when we see it, even as we continue to press for improvements where needed. The Montego Bay traffic police have shown that consistent enforcement, done properly, produces real results.

The continued support of these officers in their efforts is welcomed, and we hope other parishes will take note of what is being achieved in Montego Bay. Well done to all involved!
