Letter of the Day | Where is the tangible support for displaced and homeless?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

We have all seen it: public functions featuring heart-melting, polished speeches delivered by figures who have never spent a single night wondering where they will lay their head. These platforms yield sweeping declarations of empathy. Yet, for individuals facing sudden homelessness, whether swallowed by a raging fire, displaced by a natural disaster, or thrown onto the streets by an abrupt eviction, the rhetoric rings hollow.

The lingering, painful question for those sleeping on concrete or under tarpaulins remains: Where is the tangible support, and how does one access it without drowning in bureaucracy and red tape?

When crisis strikes overnight, navigating labyrinthine government channels often feels like an added punishment. However, looking past the endless paperwork reveals that institutional lifelines do exist on paper, and knowing precisely where to knock can mean the difference between prolonged destitution and immediate survival.

When a home is lost, waiting weeks for a committee to review an application is impossible. Formal disaster-relief mechanisms should be mandated to bypass long-term protocols for acute emergencies.

Speeches do not provide shelter, and press releases cannot feed a displaced family. While systemic reform is desperately needed to make Jamaica’s social safety net truly responsive, no one should have to navigate the nightmare of displacement alone.
