UTech president wants end to TVET stigma

WESTERN BUREAU: Dr Kevin Brown, president of The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), has joined calls for an end to the stigma that currently exists against technical and vocational education and training (TVET) subjects in Jamaica’s education system, saying these subjects are key to becoming a technological leader on the global stage.

At least 182 killed as Israel strikes central Beirut; Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz in response

BEIRUT (AP) — Israeli strikes hit busy commercial and residential areas in central Beirut without warning on Wednesday, hours after a ceasefire was announced in the US-Israeli war with Iran. Lebanon said at least 182 people were killed and hundreds were wounded, making it the deadliest day in the latest Israel-Hezbollah war. US President Donald Trump told PBS News Hour that Lebanon was not included in the deal because of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group. When asked about Israel's latest strikes, he said, "That's a separate skirmish."

McKenzie wants evidence of improper sexual conduct by school shelter occupants

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie is calling for the head of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) to provide evidence supporting his allegation that students are being exposed to sexual acts by people in school shelters. Speaking at yesterday’s first day of the JTA’s 2026 education conference in Hanover, JTA President Mark Malabver said the association has received reports of students and teachers being unable to use their classrooms where shelterees engage in unsavoury activities while occupying the buildings.

Ceasefire is threatened as Israel expands Lebanon strikes and Iran closes strait again

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The United States demanded Wednesday that Iran immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the Islamic Republic closed the waterway in response to Israeli attacks against the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon. Iran's move cast doubt over whether an already precarious ceasefire to end more than a month of war would hold. The United States and Iran both claimed victory after reaching the agreement, and world leaders expressed relief, even as more drones and missiles hit Iran and Gulf Arab countries.

Education Ministry pushes back at claims about inappropriate behaviour at school shelters

The Ministry of Education has stated that it has received no official reports of inappropriate behaviour by individuals sheltering at schools, following allegations made by Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) President Mark Malabver. WESTERN BUREAU: Linvern Wright, the principal of William Knibb High School, says governments over the years have failed to provide adequate sports facilities for athletes in western Jamaica, leaving them at a significant disadvantage to athletes from the Corporate Area, who are exposed to high-quality facilities. In a Facebook post last Thursday, during the staging of the annual ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championship (Champs), Wright described the strong political presence at the high-school showpiece as “shameless”.

GAP refinances US$95.5m loan backing Jamaica, Mexico airport operations

The Pacific Airport Group (GAP), the Mexican airport operator that manages two of Jamaica’s international airports, has refinanced a “US$95.5 million bank loan” that matured on March 19, rolling the debt into a new short-term facility with the same lender, BBVA México. “The new loan has a six-month term, with the option to extend for an additional six months, with interest payable monthly at a variable rate equivalent to Secured Overnight Financing Rate plus 40 basis points,” stated GAP in its filings.
