An appeal has been made for a high-level meeting of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) amid a recent spate of deaths on the nation’s roadways.
The appeal was made by Vice-chairman of the NRSC Dr Lucien Jones, who suggested that the meeting should involve Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, chairman of the NRSC, and all government ministries that have responsibility for road safety and their technical teams.
It comes as police statistics show that 13 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the last seven days, including five in two early morning collisions on Saturday.
A total of 106 people have died in motor vehicle crashes in the last three months, including 35 so far in October, according to the latest police data.
The 35 road deaths recorded in October is the third highest for a single month this year behind the 40 recorded in July and 39 reported in August.
Jones suggested that the high-level meeting should be used to “urgently” discuss options that are available to help halt the “carnage now being visited on our nation’s roads and causing untold suffering and grief for families”.
A total of 290 people have died in motor vehicle crashes so far this year, a nine per cent decrease year-on-year.
