The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is reporting that a Jamaican farm worker in Canada has died from injuries sustained during an altercation involving another worker.
He has been identified by the Ministry as Rajay Baker.
“Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Mr Baker was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
It said it will refrain from commenting further on the circumstances surrounding the incident, as the matter is currently being investigated as a homicide by the Norfolk County Police Service.
Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles Jr has expressed profound sadness at the tragic loss and extended sincere condolences to Baker’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Mr Baker. This is a tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as they navigate this difficult period. We will continue to work closely with the relevant Canadian authorities and provide the necessary support to the family,” said Charles.
The Ministry said it had been advised that a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted in the coming days.
It added that its Jamaican Liaison Service in Canada remains in contact with the relevant authorities and is monitoring developments.
The Ministry also reminded all participants in the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme of the importance of maintaining respectful and responsible conduct, exercising sound judgement and resolving disagreements peacefully.
“The conduct of each participant matters, as their actions can affect their own safety, the well-being of others and the reputation of Jamaica’s overseas employment programmes. The SAWP provides valuable employment opportunities for thousands of Jamaicans and supports families and communities across the island. Participants are therefore encouraged to uphold the programme’s standards and to seek assistance from their liaison officers when concerns or disputes arise.”
The Ministry said it would continue to provide support to the affected family and issue further updates as appropriate.
