A Portmore, St Catherine woman has been charged after police say she made a false report that her home was robbed in an attempt to obtain a financial benefit.

Forty-four-year-old office assistant Tanesha Wright has been charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence and forgery with intent to deceive.

The charges stem from an incident on Thursday, August 6.

According to the Portmore police, Wright reported that her home had been broken into and that several items were stolen.

A crime reference number was issued following the report.

However, investigators later determined that the report was false and that Wright allegedly used the crime reference number to obtain a $250,000 relief grant under false pretences.

According to the police, Wright subsequently gave a caution statement admitting to the scheme.

She was then charged and is scheduled to appear in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday, August 21.
