JPS cautions public against fires near utility poles and power lines

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is cautioning members of the public to avoid starting fires near its utility poles and wires to prevent dangerous situations.
The appeal came amid a bush fire in Portmore, St Catherine on Monday.
JPS said the blaze occurred in the vicinity of the Soapberry Wastewater Treatment Plant off Dyke Road in Portmore, causing four transmission poles to be damaged, as well as a section of a transmission line in the area.
The company said this resulted in two power outages in sections of Portmore and, eventually, sections of Spanish Town.
It said after the first outage at 10:30 a.m., JPS teams conducted interim repairs and were able to restore power to customers within an hour, while other repairs continued.
The second outage occurred at around 8:37 p.m.
JPS said its teams worked on repairs and restoration simultaneously, with customers beginning to be restored within 30 minutes of that outage.
Full restoration was completed at 11:40 p.m., said JPS.
The public is being encouraged to report any unusual activity around JPS poles.
