Man fatally shot during police operation in Ewarton

The police fatally shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at them during an operation in Ewarton, St Catherine this morning.

The deceased has been identified by the police as Shawn McDermott, otherwise called ‘Rammy’, a 50-year-old labourer of Sterling Castle in Ewarton.

The police reported that about 5:00 a.m., personnel went to the community of Whitehouse in Ewarton on a targeted operation.

They say the team entered a premises and that McDermott reportedly opened a back door and pointed an illegal gun at the police.

According to the police, the team took evasive action and fired in McDermott’s direction.

He reportedly fell and was seen suffering from gunshot wounds.

The police say a gun was retrieved from beside him.

The injured man was assisted to the Linstead Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations was informed, and a team visited the scene.
