Edwin Allen’s Romario Finnigan shattered his personal best to clock 10.18 seconds in the Boys’ Class One 100m preliminaries, emerging as the fastest qualifier at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

He beat previous best of 10.52 to lead finish ahead of Holland High’s Johan-Ramaldo Smythe, who also posted a personal best of 10.24.

Edwin Allen’s Kenrick Austin ran a wind-aided 10.27 for the third fastest qualifying time, the same as Excelsior’s Malike Nugent. Both advanced to the semifinals.

There was further disappointment for Calabar’s Jamal Stephenson, who pulled up injured in heat seven. Stephenson had been controversially disqualified in last year’s semifinals and was reinstated on appeal only after the final had been completed.

Class Two is shaping up as a tight contest, with several contenders advancing in strong form.

St Jago’s Marquies Page led the qualifiers with 10.47, while Jamaica College’s Kai Kelly, the Class Three record holder, cruised to 10.72. St Jago’s Jevaney Findlay (10.78) and Wolmer’s Mario Ross (10.69) also progressed.

In Class Three, Kingston College’s Kemanic Edwards posted the fastest time of 11.06, ahead of Wolmer’s Joshua McWilliams (11.10), St Jago’s J’den Fisher (11.15), and Calabar’s Alex Lewis (11.30).

The sprint titles will be decided tomorrow, with semifinals set for 4:42 p.m. and finals at 8:10 p.m.
