A warning to our leaders

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Subsequent to the passage of Hurricane Melissa, I have had the opportunity to traverse some of the areas of our island most ravaged by the storm as, in its fury, it emptied the full contents of its stomach and entrails all over us.

On each visit, my heart almost broke as I witnessed communities, once beautiful and picturesque, reduced to mere rubble.

The picture which was most heart-rending, however, was that of the look of despair and hopelessness on the faces of the residents of these villages, as they sat beside, or searched among the remnants of what was once their homes.

Jamaica has been somewhat fortunate in that, because of foresight in planning, we will be the recipient of an ‘insurance payout’.

Jamaica has also been blessed by the love and goodwill shown to us by family at home, as well as by friends from foreign lands.

As a result, we will have some cash, albeit small, to commence the long process of rebuilding.

I hereby issue a warning to any one of our leaders who will have oversight of the manner in which these funds are to be managed, that, should one single dollar be used in any dishonest manner, The Lord God Almighty will deal with you ever so severely.

JOHN ROYES
