Letter of the Day | Consider textbook relief for back-to-school

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Another school year is about to begin and parents are once again preparing to shoulder the significant cost of sending their children back to school. Among the many expenses, textbooks remain a major concern, particularly when families are required to purchase books that may receive little or no meaningful use during the academic year.

We recognise the importance of textbooks in supporting quality education. However, parents should not be placed in a position where they must spend thousands of dollars on books without clear assurance that those resources will be consistently used.

Every year, parents raise concerns with school administrators and teachers about the necessity of particular textbooks. Some have expressed frustration after purchasing books that are barely used or are only required for a limited number of lessons. For families already navigating the rising cost of living, these expenses can create additional and avoidable financial pressure.

We believe this issue requires a coordinated national response. The Ministry of Education and Youth, in collaboration with the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), school administrators and educators, should review how textbook lists are developed and communicated to parents.

Schools should clearly distinguish between essential textbooks and supplementary materials, while considering textbook-sharing arrangements, school libraries, digital resources and other affordable alternatives, where appropriate.

Parents also deserve transparency. Where a textbook is placed on a required list, there should be a clear indication of how it will support the curriculum and how frequently students are expected to use it.

Back-to-school preparation should be about ensuring children have the resources they need to learn without placing families under unnecessary financial strain.

The Ministry of Education and relevant stakeholders should examine this issue and develop practical measures that promote affordable, accessible and equitable education for every child.
