The Jamaica Under-19s have announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with at the CWI Rising Stars tournament, this after they dismantled previously unbeaten Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) by a commanding 106 runs at the Liberta Sports Club in St John’s, Antigua, yesterday.
In a match that showcased resilience, fighting spirit, and clinical bowling, the young Jamaicans secured their second consecutive victory in emphatic fashion, handing the Red Force their first defeat of the campaign.
Asked to take the first strike on what appeared to be a challenging yet decent surface, Jamaica found themselves in dire straits early.
The T&T pace attack, led by left-arm seamer Daniel Holder with 3-52 and Darron Dhanraj, 2-37, reduced the Jamaicans to a precarious 76 for 5 in the 21st over.
Captain Pajay Nelson had contributed a steady 25, while middle-order batsman Ryan Littleton chipped in with a valuable 41, but the innings was teetering on the brink of collapse.
Enter the lower-order heroes who showed true grit and determination as the surface flattened out.
Adrian Silvera played the anchor role to perfection, remaining unbeaten on 52, displaying maturity and shot selection far beyond his years.
Perico Henry played the perfect supporting role that truly transformed the innings.
Facing 69 deliveries, Silvera combined patience with power, striking four fours and a towering six in his half-century knock.
Number-10 batsman Henry provided the perfect finishing flourish, smashing two fours and a six in a blistering 25-ball knock of 24 not out.
The duo plundered vital runs in the death overs, guiding Jamaica to a more respectable 225 for 8 from their 50 overs.
Off-spinner Brendan Bodoo ended with 2-43 and toiled hard for T&T but was left to rue the late onslaught.
If the Jamaican batting recovery was impressive, their bowling display was simply devastating.
The T&T chase never gained momentum as they mirrored Jamaica’s early struggles, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Captain Brendan Bodoo fought a lone battle, top-scoring with a defiant 54, but found little support from his teammates as wickets tumbled around him.
Pacer Jahdae Moore produced a sensational spell, finishing with figures of 3 for 10 from his 4.3 overs, while seamer Henry backed up his batting heroics with a brilliant 3 for 27.
Nicoli McKenzie provided excellent support, claiming 2 for 29 as the Red Force were skittled out for just 119 in 35.3 overs.
The Jamaicans will go for their third victory when they face the Windward Islands on Saturday at Bethesda Sports Ground.
Over at the Bethesda Sports Ground, the Leeward Islands won by an even bigger margin, dispatching the Windward Islands by 144 runs.
Batting first, the Leewards scored a competitive 269-9 before dispatching the Windwards for 125.
The Windwards benefit from Tanez Francis’ 79 at the top of the order, while J’Quan Athanaze added a run-a-ball 55, while Lawshorn Bergan scored 47 from 60 to get to 47.
Barbados continued their dominant streak, dismissing Guyana by 63 runs.
Barbados scored 258 all-out in 9.5 overs before restricting Guyana to 195 in 44.1.
