Jamaica’s expanding road network demands more than routine patching. It requires a clear understanding of engineering fundamentals, including topography, geology, drainage, and material science, because these determine whether a road endures or fails.
The landscape presents steep gradients, porous limestone, clay basins, and flood‑prone plains. If these conditions are not properly assessed before construction, premature failure is inevitable. A road is not just a paved surface; it is a layered structure designed to carry dynamic loads and resist water intrusion. When aggregates are poor, the sub‑grade is unstable, or drainage is inadequate, deterioration accelerates.
Concrete principles illustrate this clearly. Whether asphaltic, cement‑based, or compacted earth, all pavements rely on aggregates bound together for strength. These basics are seldom discussed publicly, yet they explain why some roads last while others crumble.
There are examples of thoughtful engineering. The Porus road in Clarendon, built on woven mangrove roots and river shale, allowed water to pass beneath it rather than destroy it. Flat Bridge in St Catherine has survived centuries of flooding because its builders understood the river’s behaviour and designed accordingly.
Denton Moore’s recent letter rightly notes that a pothole is not merely a defect but a diagnostic clue, often signalling poor drainage, unstable soil, overloaded traffic, or a pavement at the end of its service life. When repairs ignore these causes, the same pothole returns within weeks.
Sustainable road maintenance requires organisational learning, where each failure informs future design and material selection. This ensures the wise use of public funds and infrastructure capable of supporting national development.
As investment is made in modern highways, there must also be investment in the engineering discipline that sustains them. Good roads are not created by patching potholes; they are created by respecting the land and designing with precision.
