Has man created God in his own image?

We all know the saying, ‘God created man in His own image’. Yet, looking at the world today, one may wonder whether the opposite has happened. Is God a reflection of today’s man? Has man created God in his own image?
A person’s understanding of God often reflects his own identity, upbringing, culture, and state of mind. The black race may imagine God as black and the white race as white. An angry person may believe in an angry God while someone filled with fear may imagine a God who punishes. A loving heart sees God as loving while a resentful mind may see Him as jealous and unforgiving.
But can God really be so different? Or are we simply projecting our own thoughts, emotions, and limitations onto something that is beyond them all?
ONE GOD, MANY IMAGES
Human beings are diverse in language, appearance, culture, and beliefs. This diversity is beautiful. Yet when we carry these differences into our understanding of the Divine, we begin to divide what should be universal.
We say, “My God is greater than yours. My God is more powerful, more loving, and more merciful.” In trying to establish superiority, we forget the very qualities we associate with the Supreme.
How strange that in the name of the One who represents love, we create hatred; in the name of peace, we fight; and in the name of truth, we become unwilling to understand one another. God has not divided humanity. Instead, humanity has divided God.
The sun shines equally on everyone without asking about nationality, religion, or beliefs. If nature can be so generous and impartial, would the Supreme Source be any less?
CONSCIOUSNESS DETERMINES
The saying holds true that ‘a foolish person can waste even the most valuable treasure while a wise person can find value in what others consider waste’. The difference lies not in the object but in the consciousness of the one using it.
Similarly, the understanding of God can become either a source of division or a source of transformation. It depends on the consciousness with which we approach it.
The true journey begins when we stop trying to make God resemble us and start allowing our lives to reflect the Divine.
Instead of wondering what God looks like, we should seek what God is like! Instead of defending His image, we could express His love. Instead of proving His greatness, we could become instruments embodying His goodness.
The deeper meaning of being created in God’s image is to reflect and be more like the Supreme in our everyday lives rather than making the Supreme more like us in our beliefs.
