Young Reggae Boyz suffer heartbreak

Jamaica’s young Reggae Boyz failed to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup after falling 3-1 to Canada in their Concacaf Under-20 Championship quarter-final in Puebla, Mexico, yesterday.

The victory secured one of the four automatic World Cup spots available to the tournament’s semi-finalists and ended Jamaica’s hopes of reaching the youth showpiece.

Canada dominated proceedings from the outset and created several gilt-edged chances, but failed to convert.

Shortly after the restart, the North Americans squandered two excellent headed opportunities before eventually breaking the deadlock.

Liam McKenzie opened the scoring after the interval, netting the first of his two goals to put Canada ahead.

Canada continued to dictate play and create the better chances, while the young Reggae Boyz struggled to mount meaningful attacks.

Handed a lifeline

Nevertheless, the Jamaicans were handed a lifeline three minutes from the end of regulation time when a Canadian defender committed a late foul inside the penalty area. Jahmarie Nolan calmly converted the resulting penalty to level the scores at 1-1.

However, three minutes into extra time, Canada regained the lead when Jamone Lyle committed a similar foul on Maurius Aiyenero inside the area. McKenzie made no mistake from the penalty spot, restoring Canada’s advantage.

Marcel Bibishkov had another excellent opportunity to extend Canada’s lead, but goalkeeper Joshua Grant turned his effort behind for a corner.

Any remaining hopes of a Jamaican comeback were extinguished when Max Vogele scored the goal of the match, a sensational volley from the edge of the box that gave Canada a 3-1 lead.

Canada advanced to the semi-finals of the championship and, in the process, secured their place at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
