Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Michael Ricketts said the Reggae Boyz must get their team chemistry right if they are to secure positive results in the upcoming inter-confederation play-off matches for a place at this year’s FIFA World Cup Finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Reggae Boyz are scheduled to face New Caledonia in the semi-final of the inter-confederation play-offs on March 26. Should they advance, they will meet DR Congo on March 31 for the final spot at the tournament.
Both matches are set to be played in Estadio Akron in Guadalajara and Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, respectively. Ricketts said that while the team has the talent to compete, execution on match day will be crucial.
“We have to stay confident because the games are on as far as I know and they are going to be tough games. Every team is improving now and so we just have to ensure that we get the chemistry right and execute on the day,” said Ricketts.
“That is very critical for us because that has been our issue throughout this World Cup campaign. As good a team as we may put together, if we don’t execute on the pitch on the day, then we are not going to get good results.”
The Jamaican squad is scheduled to depart for Mexico on March 24 and will be led by interim head coach Rudolph Speid, along with assistant coach Miguel Coley.
Ricketts pointed out that the technical staff has been working hard in preparation for the crucial matches, and may introduce a few new players to the squad.
“I think that Speid and his staff would have brought in a few new players but whether or not they will be on the field, that will be his decision, but we really are putting in our all as we really want to qualify another team to the FIFA World Cup for the Jamaican people,” he said.
Ricketts also disclosed that there is a minor injury concern within the squad, although he declined to disclose the player’s identity at this time.
“I understand that there will be one injury and so that player may not be available but I can’t publicly say his name as yet because we are waiting on a doctor’s report, but so far everybody else seems to be available and ready to go,” he stated.
Despite the concern, Ricketts expressed confidence in the preparation of the team and the work which is being done by the coaching staff.
“We are as prepared as we can and Speid and his coaching staff have left no stones unturned, and so we are expecting good results in both games,” he said.
