NWA to undertake road and drain works in Lucea

The National Works Agency (NWA) is to undertake drain cleaning and road patching works in Lucea, Hanover, over the next week as part of efforts to improve road conditions in the town.

The works are scheduled to begin on Monday, August 10, with patching activities planned for Seaview Drive, the corridor connecting Lucea to the main road leading to Montego Bay.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said the section of road near the Lucea Seawall has been a source of discomfort for motorists due to base failures.

Shaw said work on the section will begin on Monday and, given the high volume of traffic along the corridor, the NWA will carry out the patching at night.

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, the road section will be closed intermittently to facilitate the work.

The activities form part of a $54-million initiative to improve the driving experience for motorists using several corridors across Hanover under the GO Rehabilitation Programme.

Other corridors targeted for patching include the road from Riley to Glasgow, Cascade to Jericho, and Green Island to Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Shaw said the NWA will undertake critical drain cleaning work in Lucea, with assistance from the National Water Commission (NWC).

He said several drains, including one along Church Street near the Lucea Police Station, are clogged and have contributed to the deterioration of road corridors.

The NWC is expected to assist with flushing the drains, with the cleaning works scheduled for August 15 and 16.

Motorists are being advised to obey posted warning signs and follow the instructions of flag persons while the works are being carried out.
