The St Mary police are appealing to motorists to exercise greater caution on the nation’s roadways following a motor vehicle crash in Annotto Bay on Thursday night that left seven people, including several children, injured.

The police say preliminary investigations indicate that about 8:10 p.m., a motor car travelling from the direction of Dover towards Annotto Bay reportedly lost control along the Marking Stone main road, ran off the roadway, and crashed into a nearby shop.

Police sources said the establishment was closed at the time of the incident and, as a result, no additional injuries were reported at the location.

It is understood that the driver and six occupants of the vehicle, including four children, sustained varying injuries and were transported to the Annotto Bay Hospital for treatment.

Commanding Officer for the St Mary Police Division, Superintendent Anthony Wallace, used the incident to urge motorists to be mindful of their speed and remain vigilant while driving.

“The St Mary police are again urging motorists to exercise caution while using the roadways and to remain vigilant at all times,” Wallace said.

“We want persons to realise that even where speed is not the direct cause of a crash, it significantly increases the force of impact and the likelihood of serious injury or loss of life when collisions occur,” he added.

Wallace also encouraged road users to practise defensive driving, obey speed limits, wear seat belts, avoid distractions while driving, and ensure that children are properly secured in vehicles.

Investigations are ongoing.
