Assault case against Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott to go to mediation

The assault case against Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott was referred for mediation when the matter came up in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Monday.

Scott was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property following an Election Day clash in which Scott allegedly hit Jamaica Labour Party election day supervisor Julie Francis in the face and destroyed her eyeglasses.

When the matter came up for mention before Senior Parish Court Judge Steve Stewart both the defendant and the complainant agreed for the matter to be mediated.

They are scheduled to return on June 9.

Scott is being represented by attorney Charles Ganga-Singh King's Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson appeared on behalf of the complainant.

The charges against Scott arose from allegations that he overstayed his allotted time at the polling station.

He was confronted by a Jamaica Labour Party supervisor and asked to leave. A fracas developed and he was accused of assaulting the complainant and damaging her eyeglasses in the process.

The matter was reported to the St Elizabeth police and an investigation resulted in Scott being charged.

Scott had also reported that he was assaulted during the incident.

When the incident occurred Scott was the People's National Party's candidate in the St Elizabeth South Eastern seat.
