UWI Mona deputy principal and respected medical doctor Dr Tomlin Paul Dies

Dr Tomlin Paul, a respected physician and deputy principal at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, has died.

A notice issued by his family on Monday said Paul “passed peacefully at home”.

His family described him as “a devoted physician, educator, and mentor whose life was defined by service to others.”

“For decades, Dr Paul gave generously of his time, knowledge, and compassion. He was widely admired not only for his professional excellence but also for his kindness, humility, and genuine concern for the people he served,” the notice said.

“He will be remembered as a remarkable doctor, an inspiring teacher, and a deeply loved member of the community.”

He joined UWI Mona as a lecturer in 1990 and later served as senior lecturer in community health, director of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, deputy dean, and dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences from 2017 to 2021. He began his term as deputy principal at the Mona Campus on August 1, 2023.

Following his tenure as dean, he held academic positions at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, where he served as chair of the Educational Development and Quality Centre and dean of Research, Innovation and Quality, according to information on the university's website.

Paul was widely recognised for his contributions to medical education and public health. He was a World Organisation of National Colleges and Associations for Family Physicians five-star doctor awardee and an advocate for student engagement, continuous quality improvement, and social accountability in health professions’ education.

During his tenure as dean, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI Mona received the ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award in Medical Education for Social Accountability from the Association of Medical Education of Europe.

His office also received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Paul authored or co-authored more than 50 publications, including a book and several book chapters, with research interests focused on quality in health professions’ education and social accountability.

He also worked with several regional educational institutions and quality assurance bodies, as well as the Pan American Health Organization.

The family has asked for privacy and prayers during this time. Information regarding funeral arrangements will be announced later.
