Many are familiar with the styles of social media influencer and content creator Taveionn Telfer. But did you know that the fashionista once had big plans of becoming a designer? She even began pursuing this dream, but later deterred from it in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She tells Living, “Five years ago, during my second year of studying apparel design at the University of Technology, Jamaica, COVID-19 hit and everything shut down. Honestly, it was such a depressing time for me, feeling stuck when I was finally getting into college life.”
Even then, in the midst of the shared uncertainty, she turned to fashion as her refuge.
“I remember making a YouTube video, ‘Trying out different aesthetics’ where I raided my parents’ closet and created five looks. That video’s still on my channel, but that would be my most impactful fashion memory,” she explained.
These days, Telfer is stitching her vision back to reality and giving her online community and supporters a sneak peek into her life as a designer with her swimwear brand, AlienStudios.
Describing her style as eclectic, vibrant, effortless and sexy, she has incorporated that personal touch into her designs.
“I wanted to create pieces that feel like they’re an extension of myself; that vibe with people who don’t fit into the ‘norm’. It’s like bringing a piece of my sanctuary to the world,” she said.
When it comes to brand identity, this new designer straddles the line between bold and beautiful. The line was curated for bodies looking to make waves and “disturb the ordinary”, tipping the scale toward desire and seduction while combining futuristic vibes with unapologetic self-expression.
“We’ve got neon straps that glow under black light and string ties that defy ‘normal’ lengths. It’s about creating pieces that make you stand out, not blend in,” she highlighted.
Since the beach is her ultimate happy and safe place, and she spends nearly every moment she can by the sea, it was only fitting to launch her brand with a line that reflects her passion.
Her creations took five months to bring to life, but the magic, she says, truly happened when the pieces arrived and the creative direction took hold.
“My favourite part came in planning and executing the shoots, selecting models, being on set and seeing my vision come to life,” Telfer added.
For the promotional element, she has incorporated everything from bold visuals to playful storytelling to connect with her attentive audience. The collection is scheduled to launch officially on March 12 and features the Coy Flirty bikini set, with sizes ranging from extra-small to 3-XL.
When asked how it felt to be launching her fashion career during the month that celebrates International Women’s Day, Telfer revealed that it felt surreal.
“Launching in the month of International Women’s Day means everything to me. It’s like God saying, ‘Yep. You’re doing exactly what you’re meant to do.’ It is also a reminder that AlienStudios is about female expression and empowerment.”
Balancing business with life off the clock has been the wildest ride, but she confirmed it is all worth it: “I lean into my tribe– my family and friends’ support– and prioritise self-care when I can,” she shared, adding, “It’s about finding that flow and embracing the messy, beautiful moments.”
She advises those who are looking to take on the fashion world to start, create and experiment, “Don’t wait for perfection. Your unique voice will emerge. For me, it was about blending passion with purpose. Find your thing, own it, and let it evolve.”
