Mark Golding and the value of a credible Opposition

Jamaica benefits when its democracy is strengthened by a capable, responsible, and credible Opposition. That is why many people look to Opposition Leader Mark Golding and the People’s National Party (PNP) to provide thoughtful leadership, practical solutions, and meaningful scrutiny of the Government’s policies. A strong Opposition is not an obstacle to national progress; it is an essential part of ensuring transparency, accountability, and better decision-making for the benefit of all.

The PNP has increasingly demonstrated its willingness to engage national issues. Whether discussing the cost of living, crime, economic opportunities, education, healthcare, or constitutional reform, the party has presented alternative viewpoints and challenged the Government to justify its decisions. This is the role of an effective parliamentary Opposition, and it deserves recognition rather than dismissal. Golding has also sought to project a leadership style that emphasises dialogue, consultation, and national development. While political differences are inevitable, people should judge leaders by the quality of their ideas, their commitment to democratic principles, and their ability to offer realistic policy alternatives. Constructive criticism is a necessary ingredient of good governance, and the country is better served when competing visions are debated respectfully and openly.

The Opposition should speak clearly on behalf of ordinary people, highlight issues affecting vulnerable communities, and propose practical measures to improve everyday life. The PNP has an opportunity to continue strengthening that role by remaining vocal, disciplined, united, and solutions-oriented. Consistency, credibility, and responsible advocacy will help build public confidence and demonstrate that it is prepared to govern whenever the electorate decides the time is right.

Good governance doesn’t only depend on the performance of the Government, but also on the effectiveness of the Opposition. A vibrant democracy requires both institutions to function well. As the PNP continues to refine its policies and engage the public, it should remain focused on offering hope, accountability, and a clear vision for sustainable national development. Healthy political competition ultimately benefits everyone because it encourages higher standards of leadership, stronger public debate, and better outcomes for the nation. Mark Golding is a competent person who should continue to lead the PNP.
