In an industry where longevity is hard-earned, Govana has remained one of the few dancehall artistes to command both relevance and respect. The Spanish Town-born deejay has built a reputation for his sharp lyricism, versatility and authenticity. Following the success of his 2024 sophomore album, Legacy, Govana has continued to keep his name in the conversation through releases, such as Top LawyerMi Seh and Itsy Bitsy, while also pushing creative boundaries with The Bobby Lane Project, a short film and music compilation that has drawn praise for its storytelling.

As he prepares for a busy summer, including a performance at Dream Weekend's highly anticipated Montego Bay debut, Govana catches up with The Gleaner for this week's 5 Questions With..., discussing his career, personal growth and his upcoming appearance at the festival, which runs from July 30 to August 3. Govana is set to perform at Dream Live on July 31, joining a line-up that also includes dancehall artiste Alkaline.

1. Over the years, you've evolved from being one of dancehall's most lyrical storytellers to a household name across Jamaica and the diaspora. How would you describe your growth as an artiste and as a person?

My growth as an artiste comes from constant work and evolution. From day one, I’ve always believed lyrics and substance go hand in hand. Over time, I’ve learned how to turn life experiences into music people can feel and relate to. As a person, I’ve grown through life experiences, wins, or setbacks. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to myself regardless of trends or opinions because I’m big on individuality.

2. Dancehall continues to evolve with new sounds, trends, and talent emerging every year. How do you stay authentic to your style while remaining relevant?

The industry changes, but authenticity comes from knowing who you are. I embrace new sounds and help mould it with my sound, but even though the sound might change, I always make sure the lyrics and the music still represent me.

3. What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far, and what goals are you still working toward?

It’s hard to pinpoint one specific high point or the most rewarding event or achievement in my career so far because there have been multiple that I hold close to heart. But seeing my fans happy is always gonna be the ultimate as an artiste, and I’m still working on achieving a better version of myself every day, to better what I did yesterday.

4. You were recently announced as one of the artistes on the Dream Weekend line-up. What was your reaction when the opportunity came up, and what does being part of an event like this mean to you?

I was upbeat about it. This is like my third Dream Weekend, so I already know the energy and the kind of crowd it attracts. It’s always been a great vibe, so I’m not expecting anything less than an extraordinary night with great people

5. Dream Weekend is known for bringing together music, culture, and unforgettable experiences. What can patrons expect from your performance, and how are you preparing to make it memorable?

I step on every stage with the intention of making it memorable for the patrons. So, for Dream Weekend, it will be just the same, times 10. So, think of high-energy entertainment, especially for the ladies.

What would people be surprised to know about Govana?

People would probably be surprised to know how much of a homebody I am. If I'm not working, I'm at home. Every now and then, I'll step out and catch a vibe, but a lot of the time I'm at home. I enjoy the quiet, watching sports, listening to music, and just staying in my own space.
