Carnival Saturday found its rhythm in New Kingston as WiFete returned with a staging that leaned fully into performance, energy, and scale.
Powered by title sponsors Smirnoff and Johnnie Walker, the event brought together a strong line-up and an even stronger crowd.
From the outset, DJs set the tone for what became a non-stop showcase of sound and movement. The King of Steam, Yung Bredda, ignited the stage with crowd favourites like The Greatest Bend Over and Inch by Inch, before Voice followed with a high-energy set that quite literally left him without a voice after delivering Cyah Behave.
Staying true to the Encore theme, Machel Montano delivered with the ease and authority that has defined his dominance across the carnival circuit this season. Rounding out the line-up with a local edge was Skippa, whose performance underscored the event’s cross-genre appeal.
Reflecting on the experience after delivering a high-energy set, Skippa shared that performing for a soca-driven audience was a refreshing shift from his usual shows.
“Mi love the vibe, enuh. It different from the usual dancehall crowd, but the energy did mad same way,” he said. “Di people dem come out fi enjoy themselves, and once yuh tap into that, everything just flow.”
Despite the genre shift, the deejay said he felt right at home on the stage, crediting the crowd’s responsiveness for making the moment special. “From mi step out, mi see the flags, the colours, the whole energy, it just lift mi. Mi enjoy every minute of it,” he added.
His performance brought a distinct edge to the night, with commanding delivery and engaging call-and-response moments to songs like WYFL, Currency, and 10 past 2 that kept patrons locked in. Fans in the crowd welcomed the crossover, with one attendee noting, “Him bring a different kind of excitement. Yuh could see seh him comfortable, and the crowd feed off a dat.”
Another patron highlighted the versatility of the line-up, sharing that Skippa’s debut on the WiFete stage was one of the night’s surprises. “It show seh dancehall can fit anywhere once the artiste know how fi control the stage.”
